Double Hung vs. Casement Windows
Replacing the windows in your home is a large undertaking, and finding the right design can make all the difference. Windows come in a variety of different styles, and choosing the right one for your project depends on the aesthetic of your home and how you use your windows. Two of the most popular types of replacement windows are Double Hung and Casement. Below we discuss the differences between the two and why one or the other may be the perfect option for your window replacement project.
Double Hung Windows

Double Hung Windows have two separate operating sashes, both of which can be raised or lowered, giving you the ability to vent the window from the bottom or from the top. For most Double Hung Windows, both sashes have the ability to tilt inward, making cleaning from the inside of the home a breeze. Double Hung Windows are easy to operate, although larger windows may be heavier to open and tilt in. Double Hung Windows all have what is known as a Check Rail, which is the part of the window where the top and bottom sashes meet. Some homeowners dislike this check rail in the center of the window as they feel that it obscures the view to the exterior, so this could be a potential downside of this window style.
Casement Windows

Casement windows have a solid glass sash that cranks outward, allowing you to vent the window as much as you desire. Depending on the manufacturer, casement windows can crank all the way out to a 90-degree angle, giving the homeowner a full, unobstructed view to the exterior of the home. Even when the window is closed, the view to the exterior remains clear due to the lack of a check rail on casement windows. Casement windows have screens on the interior of the window (screens for Double Hung windows are on the exterior), which could expose them to more potential damage from pets, children, etc. Casement windows also tend to be slightly more expensive than Double Hung windows due to the additional moving parts in the base of the window. However, the price difference is often minimal depending on what manufacturer you are considering.
Replacing windows is ideally a once or twice-in-a-lifetime project, so it is important to discuss your preferences with your contractor and find the ideal choice for your home. Both Double Hung and Casement windows offer energy-efficient, stylish solutions for your window replacement project. While no one style is superior to the other, it is important to consider how you will operate your windows and what you prefer aesthetically for your home.

I'm a big fan of HEGG Windows because of their customer service, attention to detail, and amazing communication. I had got several quotes before deciding on HEGG and what helped with my decision was that they are a local company, sales was not pushy, professional, price was reasonable, and communication/follow-ups were so nice. The installers were great and the quality inspection afterwards was helpful - they already found something to fix (hardware replacement) and are on it! I feel really taken care of. Thank you HEGG! Will definitely look for you for more windows in the future.

Probably the best company I’ve ever dealt with for home improvement. We just had a small, one door project and I felt like they treated us like we had a huge whole house window install. Communication was excellent from the company at every step. Final product was high quality, and they even did a follow up inspection to make sure we were satisfied. I will definitely use this company again when the need arises.

Highly recommend Hegg Windows and Doors! Knowledgeable, professional, communicative, great selection, and low pressure sales approach! Recently had sliding doors, 3 season room windows, entry doors replaced. Very happy with end result. The walk-through after installation addressed any questions or adjustments needed. They even caulked and touched up paint inside and out! A rare company built on customer satisfaction.

The whole team was great to work with. They are skilled in what they do and very professional. We had a small job of replacing just two windows and they did an excellent job. We appreciated the follow up inspection and lessons on how to care for our new windows. Kudos to Josh, Virginia, and the whole team.

Excellent communication from the beginning of the process to the final QA walkthrough after the installation. This is the type of company you WANT to do business with rather than a company you have to work with. Excellent organization!
